It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Woodrow Lowe, a towering figure in Alabama football history, who died Thursday morning at the age of 71. Known for his fierce athleticism, quiet leadership, and enduring commitment to the game, Lowe leaves behind a legacy that spans generations—from high school fields in Phenix City to the national stage of college and professional football.
Born and raised in Phenix City, Alabama, Lowe first made his mark as a standout athlete at Central-Phenix City High School. Recruited by the legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, he went on to play linebacker for the University of Alabama from 1972 to 1975. During his time with the Crimson Tide, Lowe earned First Team All-American honors three times and helped lead the team to three consecutive SEC championships. Under his leadership, Alabama posted an extraordinary 43-5 record. Lowe’s excellence continued in the NFL, where he played 11 seasons with the San Diego Chargers. His reputation as a disciplined, intelligent, and relentless competitor earned him respect across the league. After retiring from professional play, Lowe dedicated himself to coaching, mentoring young athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels—including a return to his alma mater, Central High School.
Beyond the field, Woodrow Lowe was a man of character and humility. He was the brother of Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe, who confirmed his passing and spoke of his brother’s deep love for family, community, and the game that shaped his life. Lowe’s contributions extended far beyond statistics; he inspired countless young people to pursue excellence with integrity and heart.
As Alabama mourns the loss of one of its greatest football sons, tributes pour in from teammates, coaches, and fans who remember Lowe not just for his achievements, but for the way he carried himself—with grace, grit, and generosity.
