With a heavy heart, we share the passing of Gary Halter, former Mayor of College Station, who died on November 8 at the age of 84. His death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the city’s history, one defined by visionary leadership, civic dedication, and a deep love for the community he served so faithfully.

Gary Halter’s public service began in 1975 when he joined the College Station City Council. He went on to serve as mayor from 1980 to 1986, a period during which he championed initiatives that continue to shape the city’s identity today. Among his most enduring contributions was spearheading the acquisition of land that would become Lick Creek Park—now a cherished natural refuge for residents and visitors alike. In a fitting tribute to his legacy, the city named the Lick Creek Park Nature Center in his honor in February 2023. Beyond his work in city government, Mr. Halter was a passionate advocate for education and public enrichment. He played a pivotal role in establishing the College Station Public Library and later served as a professor emeritus at the Texas A&M Bush School of Government and  Public Service, where he inspired future generations of public servants.

Gary Halter’s legacy is not only etched in the parks, libraries, and institutions he helped build but also in the countless lives he touched through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to the public good. He was a man of integrity, humility, and vision—qualities that made him not just a respected official, but a beloved neighbor and friend.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, November 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Visit College Station Center. In lieu of flowers, the Halter family has requested that contributions be made to the Aggieland Humane Society, reflecting Gary’s lifelong compassion for all living beings.
