Jed Steele

Winemaker, Mentor, Visionary — A Life Poured into Every Bottle

With a heavy heart, we share the passing of Jed Steele, beloved winemaker and founder of Steele Wines, who died on October 31, 2025, at the age of 80 after a brave battle with bladder cancer. His departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in American winemaking, but his legacy will continue to ripple through vineyards, tasting rooms, and the hearts of those he inspired.

Born in New York and raised in San Francisco, Jedediah Tecumseh Steele was a man of depth, curiosity, and conviction. From a basketball scholarship at Gonzaga University to earning his master’s in enology at UC Davis, Jed’s journey was as layered and expressive as the wines he crafted. His early work at Stony Hill Vineyard and Edmeades Winery laid the foundation for a career that would redefine California wine. As Kendall-Jackson’s head winemaker in the 1980s, Jed created the iconic Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay—an off-dry wine that became a national sensation and even earned a place at the Reagan White House. His fearless approach to blending and his commitment to consumer-friendly wines helped transform Chardonnay into America’s favorite white varietal.

In 1991, Jed launched Steele Wines in Lake County, where he championed single-vineyard expressions and lesser-known varietals. His brands—Shooting Star, Stymie, and Writer’s Block—reflected his creativity, humility, and storytelling spirit. He mentored countless winemakers, including those at Northstar Winery, and was known for his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the craft.

Jed was more than a winemaker. He was a father, a partner, a teacher, and a friend. He lived with authenticity, shared his knowledge freely, and embraced life with a quiet strength. Whether walking the vineyards or hosting a release party, Jed brought warmth and insight to every moment.

To his children, Quincy and Mendocino, his partner Paula Doran, and all who loved him—we extend our deepest condolences. May his memory be a blessing, and may his spirit continue to inspire every bottle raised in his honor.

Cheers one last time to Jed Steele—a pioneer, a mentor, and a man whose legacy will never fade. 🍷
With heartfelt sympathy..
