Honoring Service and Sacrifice: The Meaning Behind Veterans Day
A National Tribute to Those Who Served, Past and Present
Each year on November 11, Americans pause to honor the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, marks the anniversary of the end of World War I and has evolved into a solemn yet celebratory occasion to recognize all who have worn the uniform—whether in times of war or peace.
Established as a legal holiday in 1938, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 by an act of Congress to honor veterans of all wars. Today, it stands as a federal holiday, meaning government offices, banks, schools, and many businesses close their doors in observance. It’s a day not just of rest, but of reflection and gratitude. This year’s commemorations are especially significant. In New York City, the annual Veterans Day Parade—organized by the United War Veterans Council—will feature over 20,000 service members, 25 floats, and 280 marching units parading up Fifth Avenue. The 2025 parade also marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. military, celebrating the founding of its three senior branches: the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy.
Federal holidays like Veterans Day are designated by Congress and recognized nationwide. They provide scheduled, paid time off for non-essential federal employees and serve as moments for the country to unite in shared values and remembrance. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, only two federal holidays remain in 2025: Thanksgiving Day on November 27 and Christmas Day on December 25.
But beyond the parades and closures, Veterans Day is deeply personal. It’s a time to thank the neighbor who served in Vietnam, the grandparent who fought in Korea, the sibling who deployed to Iraq, and the countless others who stood ready to defend our freedoms. Their stories are woven into the fabric of our nation.
As we observe this day, may we do more than remember—may we reach out, listen, and honor those who gave so much. Their service is the foundation of our liberty, and their legacy deserves our deepest respect.
To all veterans: thank you. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸
