Remembering a Life Dedicated to Protecting and Uplifting Others
With a heavy heart, we remember Deputy Mary Hensel, who passed away unexpectedly fifteen years ago on Veterans Day. Her loss was deeply felt then, and her absence continues to be profoundly missed today. Mary devoted more than 23 years of her life to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, serving with distinction as both a 911 Dispatcher and a Deputy. Her unwavering commitment to public safety and community outreach left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mary was more than a law enforcement officer—she was a mentor, a friend, and a tireless advocate for the people of Scott County. Her involvement in programs like the Citizens Academy, Youth Fishing Derby, Project Lifesaver, D.A.R.E., Defensive Driving classes, and the Mounted Reserves reflected her belief that true public service extends beyond the badge. She understood that building trust, educating youth, and supporting vulnerable populations were just as vital as enforcing the law.
Her kindness, professionalism, and quiet strength continue to inspire those who follow in her footsteps. Mary’s legacy lives on in the programs she helped shape, the lives she touched, and the values she embodied. Her memory is a guiding light for our department—a reminder that service is not just a duty, but a calling.
