Officer Smith was shot during a struggle in the emergency department lobby and later succumbed to his injuries at WakeMed Raleigh. His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and the entire Garner and Knightdale communities.

He served with the Knightdale Police Department from 1997 to 2013 and continued his commitment to public safety for over a decade with WakeMed.
