A Devoted Father, Tireless Worker, and Cherished Soul Lost Too Soon
With a heavy heart, we share the tragic passing of Walter Isaac Velis Gavarrete, a beloved resident of southern Belize, who died on Saturday, November 8, 2025, following a devastating motorcycle collision on the Hummingbird Highway. He was 42 years old.
Walter was driving his black SKYGO motorcycle when he collided with a blue Jeep Patriot near miles 2 and 3 in the Stann Creek District. The impact caused him to lose control and suffer critical injuries. Despite efforts to transfer him between medical facilities, Walter succumbed to his injuries at 12:07 p.m. the following day. His family, left in anguish and confusion, struggled to receive timely updates on his condition, highlighting heartbreaking gaps in the healthcare response. Walter was more than a victim of a tragic accident—he was a father, a brother, and a hardworking man who gave his all to his family and his job. As a tractor driver for a citrus company, he was known for his seriousness and dedication. His brother, Javier Veliz, described him as a family man who loved his children deeply and always made time for them. Walter leaves behind four children, including a set of twins whose birthday heartbreakingly coincided with the day of his passing.
“He loved us in his own kind of way,” Javier shared. “He was a strong working person and a family guy. That’s how we’ll remember him.”
Walter’s death has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. It also raises urgent questions about the systems meant to protect and care for our citizens in moments of crisis. His story is a painful reminder that every life deserves dignity, transparency, and compassion—especially in its final moments.
To his children, siblings, and extended family, we extend our deepest condolences. May you find strength in each other and peace in the memory of Walter’s unwavering love and dedication.
Rest in peace, Walter Isaac Velis Gavarrete. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you loved.
With heartfelt sympathy.
